Higher Education Project
The existing Moore Communications Building was demolished for the expansion of nearby athletic facilities. This building housed the KAMU TV and radio broadcasting facilities. The university decided to move the radio and TV studio productions to another building on campus, while the technical operations were housed in a new building off the main campus, adjacent to the radio and TV tower.

The Arkitex Studio designed the new “Technical Operations Building,” a pre-engineered metal structure that houses a large “rack room” for servers, a Master Control room for operations, open office and workshop areas, and a Mobile Unit garage (TV van). The project included large satellite dishes and an emergency backup generator.

Since the site was off main campus in an area with only utilitarian buildings, the client’s objectives were to keep the building simple and as economical as possible, which was achieved by using efficient bay spacing for PEMB structures and a simple rectangular shape. KAMU needed the satellite dishes to be operational prior to the completion of the building. The design and construction teams coordinated to make this possible and prevented any “off-air” time for broadcasting.
